Stotfold Juniors U12 v Hitchin Town Youth

Sunday, March 5 2006

After an agonising wait it was decided to relocate the Sunday game from Stotfold to Purwell as rabbits had undermined the sacred turf……..

Delayed but played, both teams battled graciously and solidly against the relentless cool wind.  The teams were well matched in skills and strategy, and both fought for dominance, but it was Hitchin that forced their hand and it was Tom P. who eventually planted the ball in the back of Stotfold's, well Hitchin's, own net from within the six yard line.

Half time arrived just in time to take the pressure of Hitchin, as Stotfold had regained their composure and were getting so close to pulling one back.

Second half, and the game progressed with dogged determination from both teams, it was really anyone's game and Stotfold needed to even the score, however, Hitchin gained the upper hand and broke loose up the right wing with excellent runs from Tom K. fed by several keen midfielders. Credit to Stotfold for their relentless willpower and purpose in defence.  The score remained 1- 0 to Hitchin.

Harry played a solid game between the posts, occasionally being beaten by the bounce but managing to scramble and regain control. Many gasps from the on looking parent crowd on the Hitchin side that is.

Hitchin gained the advantage, Oliver H. planted some beautifully floated balls in to the six-yard box from the corner post.  If only our boys had grown the night before they could have had a lot more goals, but it was not to be.

The game felt like a hard fought goalless draw except Hitchin took the points from that early first half goal and probably most would be feeling a little stiffer the next day, Monday, as they all ran their socks off.

Credit again to Stotfold for their tireless defence and attacking phases.  It was well played by all.  Well done boys!
