The beginning of the month saw the Colts come away from the Fairlands tournament as valiant runners up, only losing out on silverware after a prolonged penalty shoot out.
After that pre-season promise, the team was expected to start the new campaign with fighting spirit and so it was.
The Eagles got an early boost, taking the lead within two minutes when a loose ball evaded the Hitchin defence, falling to a predatory striker who lobbed the keeper. But there was no sign of defeatism in the ranks and the Colts took the battle to the other end with Joe S fighting hard in the box. A war of corners ensued, three for Letchworth then three for the Colts. And it was the home team that took their chance with Lewis bundling the ball into the net in a goal line tangle.
The Colts kept the pressure up with a series of neat interplays involving Joe M, Dan and Lewis. So it was well deserved when, as half time loomed, Leigh accepted a deft ball from Lewis and fired it forward for Joe M to knock over the Eagles’ goalkeeper to take the score to 2:1.
Fast, skilful play recommenced in the second half and the visitors piled on the pressure, equalising on the break. The Hitchin defence was just unable to divert a powerful attacker who slotted the ball home beautifully as Louis came out to meet him.
The Eagles would have taken the lead on 58 minutes but for a brilliant dash by Louis out of his goal to smother the shot. That may have proved the pivotal moment because from then on the Colts were in the ascendancy. Several attacks might have borne fruit but it was with just five minutes to go that Jordan sent a glorious cross in from the touchline for Ben to outsmart a nervous keeper to put the Colts a goal up.
Rather than defence of the lead, the match ended with continued pressure from the Colts.
The season will be a good one for the team if they maintain the solid defence, committed attacking and cool link up play displayed in their first game.
