Hitchin Town Youth U14 v Leighton Utd U14

Sunday, April 15 2007

Hitchin Town were drawn at home this weekend to Leighton United. Having already played Leighton in the League Cup this season we all knew how Leighton can play and therefore knew we were in for a tight match.

Both teams started off well with both teams having good spells all over the pitch. Hitchin Midfield of Gareth Hedges, Matt Gibson, Ross Bates and Tom Burke did well in the heat to keep up the fast pace of the game.

Michael Evans and Liam Toomey had some great attacking chances denied by the visitors goalie.

At half time the game was evenly balanced at 0-0 with chances from both teams being denied by some great play from both defences.

The second half started off at much the same pace.  A change in formation, back to 4-4-2, saw Hitchin begin to pass the ball around with greater ease but the visitors were strong and fought for every ball.

After Hitchin were awarded with a corner, at last the breakthrough came from a well taken header into the back of the net from defender Matt Morley to bring us into the lead. With only 20 mins left to go of the game it was important Hitchin stood firm. Leighton were given a throw in and from a well taken set piece managed to get the ball into the back of our net, 1-1.

Conditions were tough for both sides with the heat bearing down on the players, both sides did extremely well  to keep up the fast pace but in the end both sides had to be happy with only taking 1 point each from the game.

We are still unbeaten in the league, but you all know we now have to win every game left if we want to win this high standard league.  With so many games to 'fit' in, it is imperative that we play at the top of our game for every game!!

Well done boys it was a tough day, you did the best you could in the heat.

Onwards and upwards !
