This was a lack-lustre performance on a poor playing surface against a determined Royston team who went ahead after 15 minutes, only for Junior Morrison to level immediately after with a cool chip over the 'keeper.
Jimmy Jacob then put the home team in front, but poor defending allowed the vistors to deservedly draw level before the break.
The second-half saw Hitchin take control without ever looking totally convincing, further goals from Junior and Jordan Carter sealing the victory.
With 8 League games still remaining and a busy fixture schedule ahead, "the double" is still on, but improved performances will be needed after this unconvincing display.
