Comet Rangers Reds v Firesharks

Saturday, January 27 2007

A lovely morning and a good pitch saw an off colour performance from Firesharks today even given the 6-2 win which keeps us in 3rd position.

Rangers are a busy side who played their part in numbing any play by Firesharks but our boys seemed languid and positioning and passing and pressuring the ball were  below standard for my liking.

On 16 minutes we saw a good goal from Courts on his return from illness when he raced through holding off a defender and although forced to the left when entering the area - joy ! - he hit it with his left !!! 1-0.  Training drills pay off sometimes.......

On 26 minutes Comets equalised, an over the top ball and no connection between midfield and back line saw good goal for them , poor team  defending from us.  On 29 minutes a great corner from Kieran saw Matt step in and from 2 yards out smash it first time into the top of the net - great anticipation. 2-1

We moved the team around a bit for second half with Nick playing but clearly unwell and only 12 players at our disposal - there were not that many options.  However a good spell saw 'Sharks get into gear, pass with intelligence, and look more positive.  A Kieran assist saw Matt bag his second to make it 3-1 and then a superb  bit of interchange down the left between Dom then Nick saw Nick pass in for Matt to take his hat trick 4-1.

A handball in the area gave Nick the chance to convert and make it 5-1, Firesharks did their usual get caught on the break and the Rangers striker prodded it past Ryan to make it 5-2.
We were looking very tasty down the left wing now with Ethan supporting Nick on the wing  and Dom in the left hand channels and a Dom Pass outside the box,  square,  to Nick saw him send a dipping volley over the keeper for a lovely goal to see us clear at 6-2 on 58 minutes.

Good play from Andy again in this match holding together a back 3 but an outstanding performance from Joe M today.  He won every tackle, covered most of the pitch, worked box to box and sent some good balls through.  Best performance of the season so far from him -  I wish today other players could have been as motivated and as tireless as he was and am looking for improvements next week from  'everyone'  - not just in spells of the match but for the whole of the game!!.
