Hitchin Town Hurricanes U11 v Bushmead Wanderers U11

Saturday, April 21 2007

A bright and warm Saturday morning at Ickleford heralded the third and last encounter of the current season with rivals Bushmead in a match that on the whole proved to be a bit like watching paint dry!

From the first whistle, Hitchin were clearly the more dominant of the two teams with an early cross in from Lee being snatched out of the air by the Bushmead keeper, and shortly afterward another cross in by Adam saw Jack put a header just over the bar. The young Canaries then earned themselves a succesion of corners after shots were pushed aside or tipped over the top by the opposition keeper who was on exceptional form. All corners however, were cleared and one of them led to the the visitors solitary first half attack finishing in a speculative shot that Matt saved easily.

The lads kept up the pressure on the resiliant Bushmead defence through to half time with Adam being denied more than once and the ever alert and overworked Wanderers keeper blocking a hard low shot from Jack with the save of the day. Despite all the one way traffic though, thanks to their number one, at half time it was 0 - 0.

Second half began where the first left off, with Hurricanes pushing and stretching their defence to the limit. Rhys almost broke the deadlock with a superb header from an Adam corner which just went the wrong side of the post. Lee then took the first free kick of the game from 20 yards out and sent a screamer in bang on target but the keeper again saved his side.

After about ten minutes into the half though, the deadlock was at last broken with a great goal by Rhys after yet another corner ball put in place by Adam. 1 - 0 and not before time!

Now Bushmead at last seemed to shift up a gear and soon forced their first corner of the match which Jakob cleared well. They soon won another too, but this time Simmy cleared the initial danger and the follow up shot from the clearance was well saved by Matt. It wasn't long though before Hitchin were back on the attack and Adam, Lee, Jacob and Simmy were all unlucky not to increase the lead.

In the last five minutes of the game Bushmead did again try and save a point by creating chances of their own from several late corners but with Michael heading clear two of them and Simmy clearing the third, there was no getting through for them to equalize. The last shot of the game being from Simmy from some distance just scraping the outside of the post.

So the final score was 1 - 0 in what has to go down as the dullest game to date, mainly due to the visitors seeming to be content with sitting back defending and happy to play for the draw, but why...who knows?

FINAL SCORE 1 - 0 (Rhys)

MOM Simmy (good defending and ball placement)
