John Warner U11 v Firesharks U11

Saturday, April 28 2007

Could Firesharks beat one of the Premier leagues top teams again?. With any of 4 teams, including us still in with a shout of first place, this match saw a meeting of two sides with eyes on a top of the table spot and with so few games to go... results are becoming crucial.

A true team performance saw Firesharks grind out a hard earned 2-1 win which had all the parent group on edge until the final whistle and the Assistant Manager biting her arm off as she does'nt bite her nails anymore.............

John Warner set off at a cracking pace with speedy strikers giving us trouble from the first and thereby getting an early goal to make it 1-0.

Action from the game

Again with no space on the pitch  playing teams like this -  it was down to big efforts and big performances from all.  A few good moves saw good saves or inaccurate finishing and it felt it was going to be 'one of those games'. However a free kick awarded late in the second half just on the edge of the box saw the superb Nick set his sights and power in a blinder straight into the net 1-1 !!

Half time talk was about no panicking and just control the ball.  John Warner threatened several times and Ryan had to make a superb save, Nick dropped deep to help out defence but I felt there was a goal in it for us somewhere.

Action from the game

After Matt went very close and Dom also after dispossessing the goalie ! - a super move saw Joe F then Courts involved getting the ball through to Dom on the left side of the area who volleyed in to make it 2-1 very late in to the second half.

I was very impressed with the team in how they stayed focussed and were working very very hard  until the final whistle. Great efforts from all players today, I felt Nick was excellent, Andy as usual, Matty strong and Joe M again battling. Courts carried on from Wednesday looking dangerous. Man of the Match chosen by Karen as Assistant Manager today exactly mirrored the players choice at the end of match talk - a strong performance and a good important goal saw the worthy Dom rewarded for this game.

Action from the game

A mention to John Warner for a very able group of players, a fair team and also a very sporting set of lads at the end of the match despite their defeat. This together with an excellent referee meant yet again a display of good football at this level between two very good sides.

Result: John Warner 1  Firesharks 2 (Nick Dom)

Man of the Match  Dom
