Flitwick Eagles U11 v Hitchin Town Hurricanes U11

Saturday, March 3 2007

Hurricanes pulled back from a goal down to overcome a good Flitwick side in a magnificent display of football and prove themselves worthy winners indeed!

After the long trek out to Flitwick it was a relief to all that the rain stopped and the sun came out just before kick off. This was always going to be a great game to watch as after the seasons two previous encounters they had won a match apiece. Hurricanes had just enough players too, so with no subs available it was looking like it could be a tough one.

The first early attack of the game was in Hitchins favour, as Jack put up a good long ball to Adam who crossed it in perfectly for Lee but his powerful shot was well held by the keeper. Soon after, another long ball up the left by Michael found Josh who fancied his chances from way out, the shot was hard and on target, but for the second time in as many minutes the Flitwck goalie denied us the lead.

The goal kick launched our opponents first attack which resulted in the first corner of the game but it was easily cleared. Hurricanes then came close for a third time, Lee again, denied the opener. Another great piece of teamwork by Josh and Adam found the in-form keeper and not the net. Suddenly though, Eagles broke clear, and after a good couple of passes upfield, the home team took the lead after a decent effort from outside of the box, very much against the run of play. 1 - 0.

Eagles celebrations though were dampened almost straight away as it took just three touches from the restart, for Josh to equalise with a superb strike after being set up by Adam. 1 - 1.

Hitchin regained control of the game play, and very soon forced their first corner of the match. Josh took it well and Adam saw his shot parried away only for Lee to hit the upright. The rest of the half went all Hurricanes way, leaving Matt in goal looking quite board! Several shots were fired at the Flitwick goal Adam and Josh, who as a pair were having a marvelous game.

Eventually, the boys took the lead after a lofted long ball from Simmy found Adam who flicked it onto Josh to take his second. 1 - 2. Just before half time Lee almost extended the lead as the ball just skimmed wide. Half Time 1 - 2

Within seconds of the start of the second period, Hitchin did indeed extend the lead after another spot on long ball from Michael sent Adam on his way clear through to put the score at 1 - 3. This seemed to be the wake up call for Flitwick (and Matt!) as suddenly they came back into the game with a shot being well stopped by Matt and another hitting the post. The game now became the more even contest we were all expecting, as Flitwick showed renewed determination aided by fresh legs, while our lads slowly started to show signs of  tiring but without replacements available.

The game was now end to end, both keepers doing well until a goal mouth scramble after a home side corner found the net to bring the tension back up to boiling point. 2 - 3. Flitwick really tried to get back into it but our defence held and after a neat counter attack, Adam volleyed home his second from a Josh free kick. 2 - 4 and it was all over for Flitwick and celebrations for the Canaries after a deserved win and a team display to be proud of.

Final score: Flitwick 2 Hitchin 4 (Josh 2, Adam 2)

Man of the Match: Michael (superb strong performance throughout)
