Firesharks v Broxbourne Borough

Saturday, February 17 2007

A pleasing result today for Firesharks keeps them top of the division for the moment, but they had to work hard against an organised Broxbourne team.

It took us a while to get going and although breaking through our finishing was off target , until 15 minutes in, when Nick fired home six yards out  after a cross from Courtney 1-0.  Enthused by this we grew in confidence and made it 2-0 on 19 minutes when Joe M lashed in a dipping volley which went in just under the crossbar.

A few positional changes and we seemed to relax or maybe Borough made it hard for us? not sure, either way they pulled one back and the panic of last week set in a bit as we forgot about controlling the ball and passing it and instead bunched up and made wayward passes.

Second half I think we played a lot better and began to use the width of the pitch a little more which was lacking badly earlier in the game.  On 45 mintues Nick made it 3-1 with a good finish and I felt we needed that cushion against an improved Broxbourne side.  Nick was on a roll and on 48 minutes he kept his head in a crowded penalty area  and stuck away his hat trick goal to make it 4-1.  My favourite of the match was a good call from Nick to Kieran to receive a short corner which he curled beautifully into the top left corner , no goalie could have got to it, 5-1.

I have seen us play better, but it was a good enough performance and certainly could have been a higher score with the post being hit at least twice.  The defence was excellent today, Ryan making a great reaction save late on in the game which was top class.

A fab performance from Kayne today earned him Man of the Match. This was Kayne back to his old best, a tigerish tackler today , he tracked and pressured superbly - I felt hardly anything got past him.  Equally his distribution was excellent with decent length on his clearances.
