Hawks & Harriers U8 v Letchworth Garden City Eagles

Saturday, September 9 2006

There was a 'baptism of fire' for the U8's as the Hawks & Harriers played their first game together in the Royston Crow League at home to an established and organised Letchworth side.

The Hawks were stung early on with two quick goals, but this had the effect of stirring them into action and they took control of the rest of the half - and were unlucky not to be rewarded with at least a goal by half time. After a couple of substitutions, the second half continued where the first had left off and both sides had chances to score. Resolute defending meant that the second half ended with no more goals and the match finished 2-0 to Letchworth.

The Harriers had been watching and supporting from the touchline and when their match came, they started at a frantic pace. Both sides managed to keep the ball and it wasn't until late into the half that a penalty was conceded by Hitchin, breaking the deadlock. A second followed soon after and they went into the break 2-0 down. Like the Hawks in the first match, the Harriers put the scoreline behind them and played well for the rest of the match - again unlucky not to score from their pressure. Unfortunately, Hitchin's eagerness to push up meant that Letchworth were able to catch them on the break late on to make the final score 0-3.

The result aside - this was an encouraging start to the season and showed that this squad has the potential to develop into a good team over the coming months.
