Flitwick Eagles U11's v Hitchin Town Hurricanes U11's

Super Hurricanes show Eagles how to fly after clipping their opponent's wings in an outstanding second half display!

The Hitchin lads moved up a place in the league to third this Saturday in a match that truly was a "game of two halves" after a neck and neck first half that saw Flitwick pile on the pressure early on, leading to a rather controversial goal that gave the home side the lead. Was it over the line? 0 - 1.

Hurricanes restarted with a promising attack, with Alfie in centre midfield, passing to Josh on the left wing who after a good run down the line blasted a long range effort from a difficult angle just wide. The "giant" of a goalie then showed just how powerful a kick he had launching the ball almost into our penalty area but a solid defensive display from Jack and Simmy saw the ball cleared for the first of a series of four Flitwick corners. The danger from these set pieces was averted though as again our boys at the back along with Matt in goal cleared every time but it was nerve racking stuff to watch!

Suddenly, just as us Town supporters started thinking "this doesn't look good", our boys seemed to come alive and made several good attacks with Alfie, Josh, Adam and Rhys all having a pop forcing four corners of our own, but like Flitwick no goal came from them. The equaliser was eventually found though by Alfie who slotted the ball home from the edge of the box after a good ball in from Rhys. All level at 1 - 1. We were elated at this leveller, but then completely stunned as in the space of less than a minute...we took the lead! This time Alfie was the supplier of a long ball out to Lee on the right wing who struck a beauty giving the keeper no chance. 2 - 1 up!

Almost for the remainder of the first period, the lads held onto their slim lead against a Flitwick side that were desperate to get back on level terms throwing everything behind their attacks. Unfortunately, just seconds before the interval, their determination paid dividends, with a lovely cross being struck home on the volley into the top left corner of our net that Matt simply couldn't reach though not for lack of trying. Half time and 2 - 2.

The second half? What an absolute blinder!!! Heavens knows what "The Management" said to the boys whilst in their half time huddle, but whatever it was worked wonders! Although the home side got an early shot in that Matt saved brilliantly, our boys went on the attack like there was no tomorrow, with Adam having a shot saved and Lee seeing a good effort skim the wrong side of the far post.

Flitwick tried to counter after yet another far reaching goal kick resulted in a goal mouth scramble that Jack bravely managed to clear at the cost of a painful accidental studding in the stomach...ouch!!! Eagles now had a short spell of power play forcing a couple of corners but the defence held firm yet again. Then all of a sudden...the tables turned!   In the space of a few minutes, Josh and Adam both saw good shots well saved, as did Lee who also put two more just wide of the target. Then, with only 6 minutes left on the clock, Adam set up Lee, who this time made no mistake. 2 - 3 and the lead had been retained!

The last five minutes however, saw the most amazing display of fantastic team effort, skill and determination I have seen for a very long time, as the Hurricanes went full steam ahead! Rhys put a super ball up field for Adam who struck it home first time to make it 2 - 4. Within a minute, just in case anybody missed it, Ryhs and Adam completed a bizarre, exact action replay manoeuvre to make it 2 - 5. Two minutes later...Lee struck home again for his hatrick, after a lovely cross in from Josh met and left Lees boot perfectly. 2 - 6 after four goals in six minutes!!!

An outstanding come back after a first half that was anybody's game to win. Hurricanes deserved all the praise, applause and credit that was heaped upon them as they walked off the pitch for the second week with their heads held high and brimming with pride...only this time the result was a good 'un. And onward.....!

Final score Flitwick 2 Hitchin 6 (Alfie, Lee 3, Adam 2)

Man of the Match Adam (excellent speed and determination)
