On what was a mild but windy day, Hitchin Town (Luton) were away for an important game to put pressure on the top teams of Division 1.
The game started quite slowly, with Leighton Utd playing some good passing football around the pitch and Hitchin Town were finding it hard to gain control. Hitchin Town were ready for the game but from the whistle didn’t look like the team they have been over the past 3 weeks.
We allowed the home side to play and it wasn’t long till they capitalised with their first goal which really came from nowhere. Our heads didn’t go down, and with some great play in midfield, Michael Evans was consistent and tried hard to break down their midfield.
Hitchin Town looked slow and seemed to be last to everything. Leighton Utd carried on putting us under pressure and worked hard for every ball and yet again were able to capitalise on some defensive errors to go 2-0 up before half time.
With a poor first half, considering how well we know we can play, it was imperative that we came out with our heads high and ready to take control of the game. Jack Murphy, Matt Gibson and Tom Burke tried hard to break down the Leighton defence but to no avail, and yet again Hitchin were caught out, which then lead to the home side going 3-0 up.
Our boys were still determined to play some football and at times showed some glimpses of good one touch football. Keiron Newton yet again had a great game in defence and linked up well with Kyle Ronald. Hitchin Town were then awarded a corner, where after some 'shirt pulling and holding, Hitchin Town were then awarded a penalty. Josh Corkhill stood up to the spot and cleanly slotted the ball into the back of the net. Hitchin Town then started to pass the ball around a little better and seemed to start putting pressure on the Leighton defence.
Hitchin Town were awarded another corner and yet again, for the third week running, Matt Morley came from his defensive position to smash the ball into the back of the net literally on the last kick of the game to bring the scoreline to 3-2.
The boys tried their hardest, and were all disappointed not to have had time to bring the game around. We know you can play much better and know you will show us what you are all made of!
