Royston Celtic v Hitchin (U12's) on Sunday 23rd October 2005
After a run of two successive league defeats; games they could have won with a bit more composure, it was an expectant crowd who basked in the last of the autumn sunshine as the revamped team sheet was read out.
James and Matt Howard were finally given their opportunity in midfield and were replaced at the back by the Tom Partnership, Payne and Priest.
The first half went to plan with Hitchin bossing the midfield; putting in some good through balls to the ever willing Ben, and Tom Kinsella. It was as a result of such a through ball that Tom Kinsella latched on to a goal keeping error and pounced to make it 0-1.
A few moments later a wonderfully flighted corner from Ben gave Hitchin their second. Dale rose like a phoenix at the back post and met the ball firmly with his shoulder. When he looked round the ball was in the net.
Hitchin continued to play some exciting football, and a further goal from James; a delightful solo effort easily beating the last man before precisely slotting the ball into the far corner of the goal, gave Hitchin a well deserved 0-3 at half time.
The second half brought with it a revitalised Royston and Hitchin were on the back foot from the start.
Yet again Hitchin watched and failed to clear the danger, and Royston were back in it. (1-3). However, this time Hitchin stayed calm and kept their shape well; well better than normal, and held on playing the ball nicely out of defence at times with Billy and Ryan holding up the ball and giving the back three a deserved rest.
Time was running out for Royston, with Sam clearing up neatly on occasions at the back, but then a moment of madness brought about a Royston penalty.
Matt Rudd who had had little to do really despite the mounting pressure stood his ground, but a well placed shot set up a tense end to the match.
Despite a few scares Hitchin held on well to win an enthralling game of football. The new formation went well, certainly in the first half, and despite some tired legs in the midfield, less time in the pub next Saturday night please lads, the coaches will have to mull over some selection decisions for next week.
