LEAGUE CUP ROUND 2

Hitchin Town (Luton) Youth FC were drawn away from home to play Bedford Park Rangers in the 2nd Round of the League Cup this weekend and what a treat we were in for!!

No-one could have expected the goal frenzy by both sides and such commitment from all the boys on pitch.  With so many boys unable to play through sickness this weekend we were down to our bare minimum with only 1 substitute available, but with such a strong squad we knew we would go out fighting.

With a fast and furious start to the game Hitchin Town seemed the more dominent side playing better football than the home side,  but against the run of play Bedford Park Rangers managed to score the opening goal.  As usual, the boys heads didnt go down and with some great play from Matt Gibson and Jordan Armstrong in central midfield linking with the wide midfielders of Dean Hardware and Kyle Ronald, Hitchin Town soon started passing the ball around the park and were rewarded with 2 goals from Tom Burke to take us into the lead 1-2.  This gave us an slight edge and with some great play from Jordan Armstrong he managed to score to give us what we thought was a comfortable 1-3 lead.

Throughout the game, our solid back 4 were under pressure from a fast Bedford Park forward and we were unfortunate to refrain the home side from scoring another two goals to bring the scoreline to 3-3 at half time. Shock Horror !

The second half started much the same,  although the boys seemed stronger in their determination.  We were first to every ball and frustration started showing on the home side.  Bedford Park Rangers were a physical side and a few of our boys took some nasty knocks but we were resillient in our efforts throughout. Yet again, against the run of play, and by no fault of our team, BPR went ahead 4-3, but not for long!

Some brilliant passing and one touch football over the whole pitch Josh Corkhill managed to slot an equaliser to level the scoreline! Bedford Park Rangers, also showing a lot of determination, went in front yet again only to be counteracted 2 mins later by a second goal from Josh to bring the scoreline 5-5, therefore taking the game into Extra Time !

With such a fast moving, intense, nervous game the fantastic fitness of all Hitchin Town boys really started showing through and with some spectacular football and a brilliant goal from Matt Gibson, only 3 mins before the final whistle, the boys secured a fantastic 5-6 win. Whoooo hoooo !

You did us all proud this weekend and each week we are learning more and more about the courage you boys have.  Well done to all of you! Us spectators were treated to an exciting game and, although no-one has any fingernails left!  we knew you could win this game.

Well done all of you
