Hitchin Firesharks v HR Hatters

Saturday, February 4 2006

A Firesharks squad ravaged by illness had just 7 available players for this match today  - most of whom had been off school ill and nearly everyone was on Calpol !!  Despite this the boys easily saw off Hatters who to their credit try to play passing football but threatened Ryans goal only once - the score could have been  bigger  but  missed chances and tired legs  playing a full match with just one substitution told...but more of that later..

Nick opened the scoring with a fine run down the left touchline and from some distance lifted a high dipping volley to whistle over the keeper and nestle snugly in the net 1-0.
A Hatters break saw Ryan save bravely at feet in the box and Kayne tidily covered his keeper and put the ball to safety.  Joe F played striker today and took a neat pass in the area, cut in and lost the goalie to get the ball on his favoured right foot, beat the defenders and gleefully bashed it into the net to make
it 2-0.

Second half saw Joe M break from their kick off and power through but with only the goalie to beat saw his shot well saved.
Dominic had turned up despite being poorly to support the team and asked if he could go on. With only his second touch he allowed the ball to bounce over his head with his back to goal on the edge of the box, turned,  and drove in a low shot to the far corner of the net 3-0.  This sapped all his energy and our super sub signalled to come off !!  3 minutes on the pitch- one goal -and then off again! is this a record? Well done Dom !!
Several chances went missing today - Nick hit a post , had another shot saved on the line, Joe F fired just wide and also just over the bar.

Today the boys did themselves proud and worked very hard despite energy levels being low.  Ryan was encouraging and his kicking was good today, Kayne was superb and little got past him, an excellent sweeping role.  Ethan had more of a midfield role today and was very close contender for Man of the Match I thought he had one of his best games for us.  Andy was assured and steady and also had a run out as midfielder with some very nice touches.  Joe M was lively and strong in the tackle and put a few good shots in but just off target.  Nick was busy and all over the pitch, again he deserved more than the one goal.  Joe F had a great game and it was good to see some of the one two passing interchanges with Nick that put Hatters on the back foot.

Well done to Scott for keeping calm and focussed whilst refereeing todays game - those that watched will know why.
