The second game of the season, and once again without a full squad! This was going to be a tough game against early league leaders Bishop Stortford United.
The game kicked off with early pressure by the visitors who soon earned themselves a corner but wasted the chance. With just 10 minutes gone however, United opened up the score sheet with what can only be described as a disappointing soft goal to concede. 0 - 1. Despite being a goal down the Town boys hit back with a succession of attacks. Josh Howard made a good run and set up Deano to send the ball just wide. Jakob cleared a long ball up field to Adam who sent a screamer over the bar and moments later had another shot, after a fantastic solo run through Stortfords defence blocked by their keeper. The equaliser came eventually though as William turned his marker and set up Ward to slot home from close in. 1 - 1. Sadly, just two minutes later, Stortford came back strongly forcing Hitchin keeper Scott to put the ball behind for a corner which resulted in a messy goal mouth scramble and a lucky second goal. 1 - 2. The rest of the half saw Hitchin playing the better football but without finding the net.
HT 1 - 2
Even though late on the Canaries 10 men were feeling the need for unavailable replacements, they battled through the entire second half with grit and determination. Jack sped down the right side to cross in only for Deano to be ruled off side as the ball hit the Stortford net. Ward also narrowly missed out with a powerful shot hitting the side netting.
Michael gave another great defensive display alongside new lad Sam. Another new signing Ben shared a mix of midfield and defence duties. The equaliser didn't come though in an exciting but goal-less second half leaving the lads and their supporter’s alike feeling that they were robbed of a share of the spoils. Another day, with a full squad and subs available and the result would have surely been very different, and we'll find out in just two weeks time when we travel to Bishop Stortford for the 1st round clash of the League Cup.
