There were 127 different teams that we could have been drawn against in the first round of the prestigious County Cup...and we got drawn against this one!
The obvious old ties with Firesharks made this, from a personal point of view, a very strange game to bare witness to (and to try and report on) and very difficult indeed for the only two remaining original Hitchin Town U'8 boys in the 2007/08 squad (Jack and Alfie) to participate in.
Playing Firesharks also meant that home advantage was taken away, and coupled with the fact that thanks to registration cards being delayed in the postal strike we were once again starting with only ten men, for the first half anyway, the odds were against COVE from the kick off.
The first half was spent almost constantly defending with possibly the only decent break coming when Adam unluckily hit the side netting after he picked up well on a brilliant cross ball from Josh. The lads held out well though until the 25th minute when the inevitable opener was scored by "the visitors?" Scott was superb throughout the first period and fully deserved Man of the Match before the second half even started.
HT 0 - 1
The second half saw all the lads trying their level best and giving it their all, but the chances again were few and far between as it was evident that the lack of substitutes was taking it's toll. Hope was still there in the early stages though that we could still pull it back, but on the 44th minute Firesharks scored a first class volley of a goal from distance that Scott had no chance of stopping. Any hope then completely dashed of making the next round five minutes from the end when the third came after a powerful low strike.
So sadly, out of the County Cup at the first hurdle for the Canaries, but it was a good fair game and the boys gave a fairly good account of themselves, though to be honest, not to the same fine tuning of last weeks League Cup victory it has be said.
