Hitchin Town U11 v Knebworth Youth U11

Sunday, October 7 2007

Only three games played, but Hitchin went top of the Royston Crow Division Two with this hard-fought win over hard-working Knebworth.

The young canaries raced into a comfortable lead against a side that had won both of its previous matches. Jake Alderson sent a deflected shot looping into the net, followed by a pile-driver into the top right-hand corner by man-of-the-match Christian Farrugia.

But Knebworth worked extremely hard and caught the Hitchin defence sleeping to pull one back with a good finish.

Today was perhaps more about work rate from certain players and fine finishing from others, rather than the team as a whole reaching anywhere near the kind of passing and fluency that we know it is capable of.

Kameron Bethell's great pace and accuracy when put through made it 3-1 early in the second half, whilst Christian scored his second direct from a corner as the keeper fumbled.

Hitchin kept making chances, hitting post and bar a couple of times, but couldn't relax until James Smith had turned in a fine cross from Kameron for 5-1.

Knebworth kept going, making the most of a disjointed last 15 minutes from Hitchin as substitutions and re-organisation caused a loss of shape and discipline.

Another consolation goal was perhaps the least this Knebworth side deserved, and so it came late on.

Final score: Hitchin Town U11 5 Knebworth Youth U11 2
