Bishops Stortford Rangers U14 v Hitchin Town Youth U14

Sunday, October 14 2007

It was beautiful morning for football as we set off all the way to sunny Bishops Stortford (some a little worse for wear from following England's Rugby success the night before! ).

We were greeted by the worst pitch for a long time, it was similar to Purwell common where the cows graze! but hey it was the same for both sides. The team was down to the bare bones of 11 today and along with BS struggled for 20 mins to get any pattern of play going. Thank god D wasn't here to watch!

Never the less a corner floated in from Ben was beautifully headed in from 10 yards by Olly. Not a lot more to report on the first half. HT 1-0.

The second half was a different game much more pleasing on the eye as Ben was moved inside to the main striker’s role with Danny providing the slide rule passes from central midfield. However it wasn't all one way as BS scored a neat near post header as Hitchin were clumsy in not clearing the ball properly away from danger.

The boys in fairness responded in a fashion that gave all watching parents and coach a real lift and hopefully a taster of what this season promises. The midfield were becoming more composed and Olly & Dan were finding their passes as too was James leading like a true captain setting the example from the back.

Step up "Henry" the French one may well have gone to Barca but the under 14's have still got ours! A fantastic hatrick followed in the space of about 15 mins. He smashed his first a volley into the top corner racing onto a through ball supplied from James, then Dan passed through for him to take the ball coolly round the advancing keeper not once but twice for his hatrick. After all his hard effort in the first half he got his reward in the 2nd and a thoroughly deserved man of the Match.

A battling BS fought to the end and when a very sporting referee brought the game to an end I think the class of some of our players had told. A team with the solid spine of Harry, James , Olly & Ben were too strong in the end.

Not the greatest of performances but a win this season that we would have lost last season, the belief is there but all you boys have got to take responsibility to continue this undefeated run going. Work for each other stay disciplined and listen to Mike & Mark and you will succeed.
