Hitchin Hawks U9 v Shefford U9

Saturday, October 20 2007

From the off it was clear that Shefford were going to be no push over, they were a small yet lively side who were very good passers of the ball. The Hawks were under pressure from the start, with an early Shefford shot just going over the bar.

Shefford dominated the first ten minutes of the game forcing the Hawks back so far they were almost defending on their own goal line. Nigel Garner commented on “how very well oiled they were”. A Shefford corner was headed home to give them their first goal [0-1]. Ben had a good run through midfield and managed a shot that was just wide of the post. Shefford continued to push forward however and only an excellent diving save from Ali stopped the Hawks going 2-0 down.

The Hawks did not give up and eventually a cross from Ben was tapped home by George Rodger to make it [1-1]. Again it was a match defining moment as Ali ‘the hands’ Moatt had to run out to make the save of the season so far. It was down to Ben just before half time to put the Hawks ahead with a sliding shot to make it [2-1].

The second half continued at the same pace as the first with both teams having their fair share of the ball. Ali was once again called upon to make another crucial save as he managed to tip a long shot from Shefford over the bar. George Rodger showed off his ball skills as he managed to stop the ball dead on the edge of the box from the thundering pass, his shot was unfortunately just over the bar.

Shefford put up an excellent fight and gave the Hawks their biggest challenge to date. A great performance from all the Hawks however meant that they came out on top once more. Ali ‘the hands’ Moatt especially played out of his socks (presumably in preparation for the new one’s that are due in the next few weeks!)

Hawks: Alistair Moatt; Ryan Cafferkey; Oliver Garner; George Fitter; Tyler Gray; Ben Wilmot; George Rodger; Zac Laycock; Ed Routh.

Result: Hitchin Hawks 2 Shefford 1
