Letchworth U9 v Hitchin Hawks U9

Saturday, September 29 2007

The opening of the first game saw both sides trying to dominate the play. An early left footed shot in the 2nd minute from George R was just off target and thundered into the side netting. A speedy run down the left wing from Ben allowed for a great cross to George R who’s shot was cleared by the keeper.

Letchworth were next to have a go requiring Alistair to make a save. Ben forced a corner in the 10th minute to allow Tyler to take it short to George F who clinically aimed the ball at the top right corner of the goal only to have the Letchworth keeper save it at the last second.

A goalmouth scramble in the 11th minute had the Hawks on the back foot allowing Letchworth to draw first blood [0 – 1]. At half time the Hawks were disappointed to be a goal down in a very high paced game of which they dominated a significant amount of the play.

A strong pep talk from the manager at half time saw the Hawks come out strong in the second half determined not to go down without a fight. A shot in the 17th minute by George F required a big stretch by the keeper to tip it over the bar. A quick retaliation from Letchworth saw them hit the side netting with a wide shot.

Once again Ben found himself on the left wing and this time he found Tyler on the edge of the box, a low shot from Tyler found the right hand corner back of the net giving the keeper no chance [1 – 1]. A Tyler corner in the 22nd minute found the back post and the follow up shot from the Hawks was hit over the bar with a shot reminiscent of a Chris Waddle penalty shootout. Again Letchworth came back and another shot on target required a quality save from Alistair.

A long-range shot from Ben in the 24th minute was again tipped over the bar by the tall Letchworth keeper. Another Hawks attack saw the Letchworth keeper drawn out of goal on defensive duties allowing Ben to place a shot past him into the back of the net [2 – 1]. Finally a Ben free kick from a Letchworth handball on the edge of the area made it [3 – 1]

Well done to the Hitchin Hawks who gave 110% against a quality side and didn’t give up. Some excellent goal keeping on both sides made for an exciting match.
