Hitchin Town Youth Under 14 v Stotfold Juniors Under 14

Sunday, September 30 2007

The Purwell sunshine brought the best out of these maturing teenage Canaries.

Up against the form side in the league Stotfold had hit an impressive 28 goals with 1 against in their 3 previous fixtures this season. Hitchin under new manager, the ever vocal Mike Payne, new a slight adjustment to the team was required as we had conceded goals due to allowing supply from opposition get beyond our back four.

He pushed forward Tom into the middle of the park to stop the supply to allow Olly & Richard to feed Dan as our target man supported from either flank by Sam & Ben. So a new back four of Lewis, Captain James, Mickey & Jack with Harry in goal. A very bold line-up indeed but it worked a treat and even more so as Tom offered more than just bite to the midfield and started some lovely passing moves.

He wasn't alone of course Richard with the extra support excelled and quickly took hold as the midfield general and playmaker with Olly having the game of his career we bossed the midfield allowing Dan Ben & Sam to play free up front and it was then no surprise after 13mins Hitchin went 1-0 up. A free kick was awarded 25 yards out right of centre by the impressive referee on his debut apparently! Sam stepped up and he new it had to be a good one to beat the Crow leagues rep goalie and sure enough it was, top corner!.

The boys knew this was a game they had again started well but needed to get goals to convince an overdue win was guaranteed. The next goal was on its way before half time, Olly supplying the finishing touch to a four man move around the Stotfold box,2-0 a great time for Olly to get off the mark this season and this give the boys a huge lift. More chances were created but Stotfold held on with a terrific free kick from Richard turned round the post. half time 2-0.

Stotfold came out all guns blazing second half and Hitchin went through a patch were they just couldn’t get their foot on the ball. It was now we would see what this team was made of. Time after time Olly would power headers away from danger but even when they got passed the midfield, the back four as a unit stood solid with Harry when called upon to make some decisive sliding advances from goal having a faultless performance in goal.
With 20mins left on the clock Hitchin put an end to Stotfold fight with Sam finishing into the corner beyond the desperate dive from the keeper who in fairness like Harry had kept the score to 3-0.

Stotfold had some very good players No.4 particularly caught the eye and they were a credit to their parents and manager, with a special mention for the excellent linesman, as fair as we have experienced at this level thanks to Stotfold.

Today we played as a team and with a real focus and determination about us, lads you took responsibility and were first to everything. Ben remarkably not on the score sheet showed great discipline and great attitude on the right flank, with the skilful Lewis behind him there looks a great future. On the left at the back Jack slotted in wonderfully well and gave us great balance, the always smiling Mickey and Captain Marvel in the centre are forging a real understanding. Dan disciplined in providing real focus upfront, the goals I'm sure will flow, with Sam a free spirit not only feeding off supply but creating his own chances from mazy dribbles.

As good as it has been for sometime and if this performance is repeated weekly we should be in for some glorious spectacles this season.

Well done Lads keep working together as a team and you will go far.
