With Broadhall thrashing Roebuck Golds the same morning and holding games in hand, the title may ultimately prove to be out of reach. But Hitchin's under-13s won this tough game to stay top of the league with just two to play.
Hitchin are the most improved team in Royston Crow Division One this season. In recent weeks they have shown endurance as well as ability and team spirit as well as organisation.
Including double headers, this was Hitchin's seventh game in two weeks. They went into it with only 10 fit players, Kier Boyd playing the full game despite a groin problem. Walking wounded Jake Alderson and Michael Williams came along to cheer on their team mates, and hopefully the pair might yet be back before the end of the season.
Bishops Stortford are one of the best teams in the division and caused Hitchin problems throughout. But the lead was grabbed when Jake Holbrook headed in from a pinpoint Kier corner and then some fine work from Adam Hallybone saw Ross Maddox double the margin.
Stortford were unlucky to be two behind and nabbed a goal back from a penalty just seconds before half-time.
The away time pushed hard from the beginning of the second period and levelled the scores when a breakaway caught the canaries napping.
With Hitchin looking tired, prospects for a win looked grim, but Rhys Dainton then went on a marauding run down the right and crossed for Ross to tap in, and Rhys did the same again minutes later - finishing off the move himself for 4-2. This was a stunning response from Hitchin.
Stortford were not finished and pulled another goal back just before full-time, but thankfully the whistle finally came before any more excitement.
Fantastic game, fantastic win.
